Sydney Murl Miss Leonard

December 2, 1912 — June 30, 2005

Sydney Murl Leonard was born December 2, 1912 at the Leonard Family home in the Possum Trot Community of Marshall County. She was the third of four children of Tolbert Stuart and Eunice Hamilton Leonard. An unnamed infant brother died shortly after birth and her other two brothers preceded her in death: Hugh Albert Leonard and Jessie Elbert Leonard.

Miss Murl attended school in Marshall County, beginning at Leonards School early, then Archer School, where she began her basketball career on an outside dirt court. She transferred to Belfast High School for two years, playing basketball there, and finally graduated from Cornersville High School in 1931. She taught school briefly at Knat Grove Academy, but spent the majority of her working career at Red Cedar Pencil, later CosmoLab, from 1935 until her retirement in 1977. She retired as Office Manager and Assistant Secretary. She was a faithful and lifelong member of the Richland Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the Spring Place Community of Marshall County. As the years progressed Miss Leonard moved to Lewisburg, where she resided at Village Manor.

Miss Leonard died at midnight Thursday morning, June 30 in Marshall Medical Center. She is survived by a great-nephew: Doug Martin of Lewisburg; and great-niece: Margaret Martin Turner of Middlesboro, KY; 7 great-great-nieces and nephews; and 1 great-great-great nephew. Other family that preceded her in death were a niece: Hilda Leonard Martin; and great-niece: Lynda Martin Spivy.

Funeral services for Miss Leonard will be conducted Friday at 11:00 AM from the chapel of Bills McGaugh Funeral Home. Burial will be beside family at Head Springs Cemetery in Belfast. Pallbearers will be Hubreen Looney, Will Brown, Jim Rickman, Tommy Leonard, Jerry Tate, and Norman Henson.

The family will be at Bills McGaugh Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 8:00 PM for visitation and Friday until the funeral hour.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bills McGaugh Funeral Home and the United States Forest Service have provided for the planting of a tree in memory of Miss Leonard.
