Meriel Pack's Obituary

Listen to Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Meriel Pack, cherished father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who departed this life on April 3, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on August 30, 1934, in the community of Catalpa, Tennessee, Meriel was a kind, gentle, and humble man whose life was marked by a selfless devotion to those he loved.

Meriel’s dedication to his family was unwavering, and he exemplified the very essence of love and kindness. A true jokester, he had an innate ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him, making their burdens a little lighter.

Meriel dedicated a portion of his younger years serving his country in the US Army, both before and during the Cold War. His commitment to service exemplified a deep sense of duty, honor, and patriotism.

From a young age, Meriel attended the Catalpa Church of Christ, where he served his community faithfully from the age of seven until shortly before his passing. He faithfully worked in the church for at least 60 years. Meriel was known for his incredible faith and devotion, having read the Bible more than twelve times from beginning to end, which shaped his character and provided guidance throughout his life. His life was one of hard work, service, and devotion, and he made it a priority to visit the elderly and shut-ins, sharing his time and warmth with those who needed it most. He was employed at Genesco for 24 years, Cathey Furniture Company for 5 years, and the Town of Petersburg for 27 years until his retirement in 2018 at the age of 83.

Outside of his church and work commitments, Meriel found joy in tending to his yard, often mowing and weed eating to keep his home beautiful. His contributions to his community and family will be remembered fondly, as he went above and beyond to assist others in times of need.

Meriel was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Charlie and Bessie Elora Rhodes Pack, his wife of 52 years that passed in 2011, Juanita Sowell Pack, siblings, Cecil Odell Pack, Aloise Pack Sowell, twin brother, Jeriel Pack, sister-in-law, Ruth Pack, and brothers-in-laws, Lyndell Butch Sowell and Eugene Renegar. He is survived by his daughters, Sheila (Terry) Upchurch of Shelbyville, TN and Connie (Jim) Davidson of McEwen, TN, son Jeff (Terri) Pack of Petersburg, TN, grandchildren, Kasey (Jeremy) Greene, Peyton Clark, Stephen Clark, Kami (Zack) Teska, Charlie Pack and girlfriend Kaitlyn York, Logan Pack and girlfriend Lahna Freeland, and Shawnee Upchurch, great grandchildren, Mason Greene, Emmy Greene, Lucy Greene, and Addi Kate Pack, sister, Frances Renegar, sister-in-law, Alice Pack, numerous nieces and nephews, and beloved pet, Gizmo.

Funeral services for Meriel Pack will be held at the Cane Creek Church of Christ in Petersburg on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and will resume on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 10:00 AM until time for the funeral service. Burial will follow at Talley Cemetery, where he will rest among the peaceful hills of Petersburg. Tim Pack, Charlie Pack, Logan Pack, Peyton Clark, Stephen Clark, and Jeremy Greene will serve as pallbearers. The granddaughters, great grandchildren, the men of Catalpa Church of Christ, and Michael Head will serve as the honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Catalpa Church of Christ or Talley Cemetery.

Meriel found companionship in the care of hospice nurse Andrew, whose visits brought light to his days. Together, they shared moments filled with jokes, songs, and heartfelt conversations, providing Meriel with comfort and joy during his final chapter. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the Compassus Hospice staff.

No harsh word was ever spoken about him, nor did he ever utter a negative comment about anyone. Meriel’s gentle spirit and unwavering love for his family and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Bills-McGaugh & Hamilton Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
