David Glenn Smith, 58, of Belfast, Tennessee, passed away on August 7, 2025. Born on August 18, 1966, in Athens, Alabama, David was a devoted family man, known for his unwavering love and support towards his loved ones. He was a treasured son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
David was dedicated to his professional life as a correctional officer with the Marshall County Jail. His colleagues affectionately referred to him as "Big Dave," a testament to both his stature and his larger-than-life personality. His brother and him were nicknamed in school by a coach. David was humorously called "Too Small” and his brother was “Too Tall,” which fondly highlighted their childhood together.
Outside of work, David had a passion for the outdoors. He loved camping and fishing, often spending weekends with his family. He was also a master of outdoor cooking, known for delicious BBQs, fish fries, and memorable gatherings around the grill. His hard-headedness and stubborn nature were often accompanied by his quick wit, as he enjoyed joking with others and sharing laughter.
Funeral services to honor David's life will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Bills-McGaugh & Hamilton Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home and will take place Monday, August 11, 2025, from 4:00 until 7:00 PM and will resume Tuesday, August 12, 2025, from 10:00 AM until the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Friends and family are invited to gather to share memories, celebrate his life, and support one another during this difficult time.
David is preceded in death by his father, Merle Smith; mother, Elbalene Burgett Thompson; and brother, JC Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Brittany (Ruby) Blake (Bridgett) Hardison; his brother, Paul “Too Tall” Smith; sisters, Jeannie Reese (Jeff) and Jamie McDaniel; grandchildren who called him E-Daddy, Cheyanne Henderson, Heather Buford, McKenzie Thorton, Haley Hardison, and Candice Hardison; great grandchildren, Chloe Motes, River Henderson, Kyron Buford, Glenn Henderson, and Emilee Thorton; special friend, Carol Binkley, and numerous nephews and nieces.
David Glenn Smith leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and camaraderie that will continue to inspire those he touched. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
