John Wallace

Lewisburg attorney John L. Wallace died Wednesday afternoon, December 29, 2004, in Maury Regional Hospital.

Born in Lewisburg on October 1, 1919, Mr. Wallace was one of four children to Cecil Cundiff and Angie Mae Gill Wallace, and was a 1938 graduate of Marshall County High School.

John entered the United States Army on July 9, 1941. He trained at Camp Wheeler, GA; Fort Benning, GA; Fort Bragg, NC; and Camp Shelby, MS. He left the country in January 1944, bound for the European Theater of World War II.

As a paratrooper with the 82nd Parachute Infantry Division, he became a decorated veteran of World War II, distinguishing himself with several combat jumps, including Normandy and Operation Market Garden. Completing his military service, he was discharged in February, 1946 at Fort Knox, KY, having attained the rank of Captain.

After the war, John went to Washington where he served as an aid and secretary to Joe L. Evans. He returned to Nashville, where he lived with his childhood friend, James M. Buddy Jones, Jr. during law school. In 1947, he graduated from Cumberland University Law School in Lebanon, TN, and soon returned to Lewisburg.

In 1948, he and Mr. Jones established their law firm known as Jones & Wallace. During the next 10 years, they would work together until Mr. Jones departure into the banking industry.

On May 26, 1951, John Wallace entered another partnership. This time with Miss Joanne Sharp. The two were married in Lewisburg at the First Baptist Church. They would have three children, and be together until Mrs. Wallaces death in September, 1980.

During his career as an attorney, Mr. Wallace served as legal council for the Peoples & Union Bank of Lewisburg, and as a member of the Board of Directors from 1970 until the banks sale in 1997. He also served in the Tennessee State House of Representatives, and was a member of the Lewisburg First United Methodist Church.

He remained active in private law practice up until his death on Wednesday. Attorney John Wallace was distinguished among his peers for his absolute integrity where law was concerned.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by a brother: Gill Wallace during World War II. He is survived by his three children: Madalyn Wallace Kelton Thomas; Joanne Poppy Wallace Tim Harrison, and John Laws Charlotte Wallace III, all of Lewisburg; a sister: Mrs. Jane Wallace Alford of Lewisburg; a brother: George B. Wallace of Maryville, TN; and 3 grandchildren: Jonathan C. Harrison, Mary Ashley Harrison, and Joanna L. Harrison.

It is requested that memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice in Mr. Wallaces name.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 31, 2004 at 2:00 PM from the Lewisburg First United Methodist Church. Rev. Michael OBannon will officiate. Burial will follow in Lone Oak Cemetery with military honors.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jonathan Harrison, Kelton Thomas, Tim Harrison, George Wallace, Jr., Bill Marsh, and Eddie Wiles.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Marshall County Bar Association, the Employees of the First Commerce Bank, the Brekfus Shop Bunch, and lifelong friend, Buddy Jones.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 30th, from 4:00 8:00 PM at Bills McGaugh Funeral Home, and again on Friday, December 31st, from 12:00 noon until the 2:00 PM funeral hour at the First United Methodist Church.

Bills McGaugh Funeral Home and the United States Forest Service will provide for the planting of a tree in memory of Mr. John L. Wallace.
