James Gilliam

Mr. James Ralph Gilliam, age 88 of Lewisburg, died Tuesday morning, May 13, 2003 in St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.

Mr. Gilliam was born May 18, 1914 to James O. and Mattie Dark Gilliam, and was raised in the Nashville area. He served as a Master Technical Sergeant during World War II in the United States Marines. Following duty with VMF-112, he continued the Pacific campaign effort aboard the USS Bunker Hill with VMF-451 which participated in New Georgia, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa operations. Wounded aboard the Bunker Hill on May 11, 1943, he later received the Purple Heart. Discharged in 1945, his post USMC activity included auto body repair, aircraft hydraulics maintenance, and construction contractor. Locally, he was a self-employed general contractor, best known for his carpentry skills and abilities. He continued to work until recently as his health failed him. Mr. Gilliam was also an active member of the Westvue church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife: Mary Bellamy Gilliam of Lewisburg; a son: Lanny Allen Gilliam of Kingwood, TX; and two grandchildren: Ashley Lauren Gilliam of Glade Spring, VA, and Nicholas Dario Gilliam of Kingwood, TX. He was preceded in death by a son: Michael Gilliam in 2000.

The family will visit with friends Thursday from 3:00 until 5:00 PM at the Westvue church of Christ. Under the direction of Bills McGaugh Funeral Home, a memorial celebration for Mr. Gilliam will begin at 5:00 PM at Westvue church of Christ, led by Bro. Jason Hart. In a moving indoor ceremony, the flag of the United States will be presented by the United States Marines Reserve Corp. of Nashville, TN following the service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice in Mr. Gilliams memory.

Bills McGaugh Funeral Home and the United States Forest Service have provided for the planting of a tree in memory of Mr. Gilliam.
