Howard Lawrie

July 11, 1919 — January 14, 2005

Mr. Howard M. Lawrie, age 85 of Lewisburg, died Friday, January 14, 2005 at his residence.

Mr. Lawrie was a native of Sheldon, IA, son of the late William Alexander and Lillian Wilsey Lawrie, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lewisburg.

He received his music training and was a graduate of the Chicago Conservatory of Music. He was a talented trumpet player, band leader and choir director, with the gift of bringing out talent in others.

With his Masters Degree in Music and Education certification from MTSU, he was the first Music Theory instructor at Columbia State Community College, former band director at Marshall County High School, and former choral director at Franklin First Presbyterian Church and Lewisburg First United Methodist Church.

As a veteran of WWII, he served with the United States Navy aboard the USS Enterprise.

He is survived by his wife: Annette Bills Lawrie of Lewisburg; three children: Warwick W. Wickey Lawrie of Nashville, William H. Bill Lawrie of Lewisburg, and Melinda Lawrie Epperson of Slidell, LA; one sister: Leora Lawrie Melmer of Custer, SD; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 17 at 11:00 AM from the chapel of Bills McGaugh Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Leslie Glover and Rev. Claude McMillion.

Mr. Lawries love for music was the focus of his service. Mrs. Elise Dumser provided musical selections, including Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring, O Divine Redeemer, and Christ Of The Upward Way.

A mens quartet, consisting of Bobby Walker, Bill Wallace, Bill Morgan, and Ted Dunning, offered Eternal Father Strong to Save. A Mighty Fortress was selected as the casket was removed from the chapel by pallbearers Bill Turner, Joe B. Brandon, John Hursh, Bobby Walker, Bill Wallace, and Ted Dunning.

Honorary pallbearers were Wendell Pigg, Ray Farley, and Bill Morgan.

Bagpipes accompanied Mr. Lawrie to the grave in Sunset Park Cemetery with the melody of Scotland, the Brave. A military detail, provided by the United States Navy, presented the American Flag, as Colin Beatty, one of Mr. Lawries former trumpet students, presented taps.

The Lawrie family received friends at Bills McGaugh Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 6:00 PM, and again on Monday from 9:00 AM until the funeral hour.

It is requested that memorial donations be made to the Willowbrook Hospice, 1164 Columbia Ave, Franklin, TN 37064, or the Lewisburg First Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund.

Bills McGaugh Funeral Home and the United States Forest Service have provided for the planting of a tree in memory of Mr. Lawrie.
